Do probiotics need to be refrigerated? Not as a category. It depends on the storage line printed on that product’s own label. Of the nine listings we read on Amazon on Oct 28, 2026, two ask for refrigeration, one says best if refrigerated, one says “Do not refrigerate.”, and the rest are room-temperature, cool-and-dry, or shelf-stable. This page makes no effect claim.
We read the listings’ label text. Strain names, labeled amounts, and refill format sit on a different page: how to compare probiotic and synbiotic labels.
Nine listing storage lines, read on Oct 28, 2026
| Product | ASIN | Storage line on the listing | Fridge? | Opening-related line |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Florastor Probiotic, 30 Capsules (BioCodex) | B01N4E0LVB | “Do not refrigerate.” | Do not | None printed |
| Align Probiotic 24/7, 56 Capsules | B00UVAHDBS | “Store at room temperature. For best results we recommend you store Align in the original blister package.” | Not required | “store Align in the original blister package” |
| Culturelle Digestive Daily Probiotic, 30 Count | B0025ASIRK | “Store Culturelle® in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Close cap firmly after use.” | Not required | “Close cap firmly after use.” |
| Physician’s CHOICE Probiotics 60 Billion CFU, 30ct | B079H53D2B | “Store in a cool, dry place.” | Not required | None printed |
| Jarrow Jarro-Dophilus, 60 Ct | B00028NV2E | The listing text does not print a storage temperature. The highlight says “Shelf-Stable”. | Not required | “Blister-packed” |
| Garden of Life Raw Probiotics Ultimate Care, 30 Capsules | B00AR0ENJ2 | “Shelf Stable” | Not required | None printed |
| Renew Life Extra Care Digestive Probiotic, 90 capsules | B00FPNZBVA | “Store at 77ºF (25ºC) or below. Best if refrigerated.” | Recommended | None printed |
| Florajen Digestion Probiotic, 60 Capsules | B001394KKS | “Refrigerate for maximum freshness and effectiveness.” | Required | None printed |
| Nature’s Way Primadophilus, 180 Capsules | B0009ETANA | “Keep refrigerated to maintain maximum potency.” | Required | None printed |
Jarrow and Garden of Life are the shelf-stable rows with no temperature in the listing text. Not required, in the Fridge column, means those listings do not ask for a fridge.
Do all probiotics need to be refrigerated? These nine labels do not share one answer.
Four wording groups and the storage action
Wording that says keep refrigerated
The Required rows are Florajen and Nature’s Way. Nature’s Way’s title also says “Keep Refrigerated”. The storage action is to refrigerate that product.
Wording that says best if refrigerated
Renew Life’s table line sets a ceiling of 77ºF (25ºC) and says “Best if refrigerated.” The same listing also says “refrigeration is recommended, but not required”. The action is that pair. The second sentence is why the Fridge column says Recommended.
Wording that says room temperature or a cool, dry place
Align’s table line names room temperature and the original blister package. The description adds “Align Probiotic is vegetarian, gluten-free, soy-free and does not require refrigeration.” Culturelle’s table line names a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and says “Close cap firmly after use.” Physician’s CHOICE says “Store in a cool, dry place.”, calls the product “Our non-refrigerated probiotic”, and says “We use a shelf-stable bottle”.
Follow the place the label names. A cool, dry place here is a different printed instruction from the keep-refrigerated lines. Jarrow (“Shelf-Stable” and “Blister-packed”) and Garden of Life (“Shelf Stable”) are the shelf stable probiotics with no temperature in the listing text. A degree line, if one exists, is on the package you receive.
Wording that says do not refrigerate
Florastor’s table line is “Do not refrigerate.” The about-this-item line says “Shelf stable: 3-year shelf life; no refrigeration required; exposure to heat or sunlight may lead to melting or damage to the product”. The description says “Our patented freeze-drying process gives Florastor a three-year shelf life protecting the live cells without refrigeration.” Leave Florastor out of the refrigerator, and away from heat and sunlight, because that listing names melting or damage. Those lines are not the plan for Florajen or Nature’s Way.
Numbers for refrigerated, cool, and room temperature
The CRN/IPA Best Practices for Probiotics document (revised 11-12-2020) states: “Manufacturers should provide storage and handling instructions to customers, taking into account individual formulations and packaging.” It also states: “Probiotic organisms are generally sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity.” Those sentences are not a ranking of these nine listings.
The same document gives USP <659> definitions as “Refrigerated 2°C to 8°C; Cool 8°C to 15°C; Controlled room temperature 20°C to 25°C”. Under those ranges, cool begins at 8°C, where refrigerated ends. A label that says “cool, dry place” is not the same instruction, in these definitions, as a label that says keep refrigerated.
Align prints “room temperature” and no degree number. The CRN/IPA definition of controlled room temperature is 20°C to 25°C. Align did not print that range. Renew Life’s 77ºF (25ºC) line sits at the top of it.
Fenster and colleagues, in a 2019 review in Microorganisms, state: “Currently, probiotics may be incorporated in dietary supplements and other “dry” food matrices which are expected to have up to 24 months of stability at ambient temperature and humidity.” That sentence is about a class of dry products. It does not assign 24 months to any row in the table.
One storage line from purchase through use
None of the nine listing texts splits a before-opening instruction from an after-opening instruction. Do probiotics need to be refrigerated after opening? On these listings, the storage line does not change at opening. Probiotics refrigerated before opening have the same result here: no second line is printed.
Culturelle is the only after-use sentence: “Close cap firmly after use.” It sits beside the cool, dry place line. It says to close the cap. It does not print a new temperature after opening.
Align says to store Align in the original blister package. Jarrow says “Blister-packed”, and the listing text does not print a storage temperature. The blister is the package those listings name. It is not a separate temperature.
Unless the package you receive prints a split these listings did not, the same line applies from purchase on.
Warm arrival and one brand’s travel window
Florajen’s arrival line is for that brand: “To ensure refrigerated product upon arrival, order Florajen Probiotics from (Ships and Sold by Amazon).” The listing tells shoppers to buy the Ships and Sold by Amazon offer for a refrigerated product on arrival.
The same listing says “Florajen Digestion can also be stored at room temperature for up to two weeks without losing potency, making it ideal for travel or everyday use.” That two-week window is this brand only. The other eight listings do not print it.
Florastor’s shelf-stable line, quoted above, says exposure to heat or sunlight may lead to melting or damage to the product. Garden of Life prints this shipping sentence: “PROBIOTIC POTENCY GUARANTEED THROUGH EXPIRATION: This probiotic supplement’s viability is maintained even if the product is warm for a few days during shipping; Shelf Stable”. That sentence stays the brand’s.
The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements probiotics fact sheet for health professionals states: “the WGO recommends that probiotic supplement users check the labels of probiotic supplements for recommended storage conditions; for example, some require refrigeration, whereas others can be stored at room temperature.”
Serving size and the rest of a panel have their own reading order in how to compare supplement labels. This page reads the storage line.
Do probiotics need to be refrigerated only as the label says
We read the listings’ label text on Amazon on Oct 28, 2026. Labels change, so check the package you receive. This page is not medical advice. Do probiotics need to be refrigerated? Follow the storage line on the package you receive. Strain names, labeled amounts, and refill format stay in how to compare probiotic and synbiotic labels.

FAQ
Do probiotics need to be refrigerated after opening?
None of the nine listings read on Oct 28, 2026 prints a separate after-opening storage temperature. Culturelle's storage instructions say "Close cap firmly after use." The storage line on the package is the instruction from purchase onward, unless that package prints a split these listings did not.
Do probiotics need to be refrigerated before opening?
The same nine listings do not split a before-opening rule from an after-opening rule. Align says to store Align in the original blister package. Jarrow's listing says "Blister-packed" and the listing text does not print a storage temperature. Follow the storage line on your label.
Do probiotics need to be refrigerated to work or to be effective?
The label is the instruction. This page makes no claim about effect. Two listings ask for refrigeration, Renew Life says best if refrigerated, Florastor says "Do not refrigerate.", and the other listings print room-temperature, cool-and-dry, or shelf-stable wording.
What if a probiotic shipment arrives warm?
Florajen's listing says "To ensure refrigerated product upon arrival, order Florajen Probiotics from (Ships and Sold by Amazon)." Florastor's listing says exposure to heat or sunlight may lead to melting or damage to the product. Check the storage line on the package you received.
Does Florajen's two-week room-temperature line cover every probiotic while traveling?
No. That window is one brand only. Florajen's listing says "Florajen Digestion can also be stored at room temperature for up to two weeks without losing potency, making it ideal for travel or everyday use." The other eight listings do not print that window.
